Hanging an interior door: tips for a perfect fit

Hanging an interior door correctly is important for a door that opens and closes smoothly and fits neatly into the frame. A small deviation can cause the door to stick or result in uneven gaps. A few checks can prevent many problems.

Check the door and the frame first

Before hanging the door, check that the frame is straight and the hinges are secure. Also, check that the dimensions of the door match the available space in the frame. A crooked frame or a loose hinge can affect the fit.

Hang the interior door carefully

Place the door on the hinge points and immediately check that it hangs straight. Open and close the door slowly a few times. This will quickly show you if the door is rubbing anywhere or if it has too much clearance. Adjust the door if necessary before making final checks on the lock and strike plate.

Ensure sufficient clearance around the door

An interior door needs some space all around to move smoothly. Pay special attention to the clearance at the top and along both sides. Try to keep the gaps as even as possible. Too little clearance can cause the door to stick when temperatures or humidity levels change.

Check the fit

Finally, check that the door opens and closes smoothly and that the latch bolt falls neatly into the strike plate. Small deviations can often be corrected by adjusting the hinges or the position of the strike plate.

Practical tip: close the door fully several times before finishing the installation. This way, you will immediately notice if the door is rubbing anywhere or not closing properly.
