Measuring Door Dimensions: How to Measure Height, Width, and Thickness?
Before ordering new door hardware or replacing an entire door, knowing the correct dimensions is crucial. Fortunately, measuring a door is simple, provided you know what to look for and what type of door you have. As specialists, we are happy to explain this to you step by step.
Measuring width and height
How you measure depends on your door type. Do you have a flush door (which fits entirely within the frame)? Then simply measure the full width and height of the door. For a rebated door (a door with an overlapping edge), this works differently. For the width, measure the inside of the door, without the overlapping edge. For the correct height, measure the outside of the door, including the overlapping edge.
Determining door thickness
For choosing suitable door hardware, such as long backplates or handles on roses, door thickness is essential. The standard door thickness in the Netherlands is usually between 38 and 40 mm. You measure this by placing a tape measure flat on the edge of the door. Please note: for a rebated door, only measure the thick base part and do not include the narrow edge.
Our practical tip
Always measure the width of a door in several places (bottom, middle, and top). Especially older wooden doors or frames can warp or sag slightly over time. By measuring at three points, you won't encounter any surprises during installation.
