Soundproofing interior doors: Tips for a quieter home

Much of the noise pollution in a home arises simply because sound easily travels through and past interior doors. Whether it's a home office, bedroom, or busy living room, the right door choice and finish make a world of difference to living comfort.

Opt for a solid core (chipboard)

Standard interior doors often have a light 'honeycomb' core. These doors allow sound to pass through almost unimpeded. Do you really want peace and quiet? Then choose a door with a solid chipboard core. The high mass of the solid material breaks sound waves, making voices and TV sounds barely audible.

Seal sound leaks around the door

A solid door alone is often not enough. Sound behaves just like water: wherever air can pass through, sound travels directly with it. The space under and around the door is the biggest culprit for sound leakage.

Our practical tip

In practice, we see that people invest in a heavy, sound-insulating door but forget about the seams. Always combine a solid interior door with good frame seals and a high-quality automatic door bottom at the bottom. An automatic door bottom automatically drops down as soon as the door closes and perfectly seals the gap at the floor, without you having to install thresholds.
