Maintaining wooden doors: how to prevent warping

Wood is a natural material that reacts to changes in temperature and humidity. Especially when the indoor climate fluctuates significantly, a wooden interior door can expand and eventually warp. With proper maintenance and a stable indoor climate, you can minimize the risk of warping.

Why does a wooden door warp?

Wood absorbs moisture from its surroundings and releases it again. Large differences in humidity can cause the wood to expand or shrink. Temperature differences, such as between a heated and an unheated room, can also have an impact. A door that is exposed to significantly more heat or moisture on one side for a prolonged period may deform as a result.

How to prevent your wooden door from warping

Try to avoid large and rapid temperature fluctuations. Additionally, ensure adequate ventilation and keep the humidity in your home as stable as possible. It is best not to place a wooden door directly next to a strong heat source, such as a radiator. If you have a new wooden door, it is wise to let it acclimatize before installing it.

Maintenance of a wooden interior door

Clean a wooden door with a soft, slightly damp cloth and use maintenance products suitable for the existing finish. Regularly check that the lacquer, oil, or other protective layer is still intact. Damage can make the wood more susceptible to moisture.

Practical tip: Pay close attention to doors that suddenly start to stick or become difficult to close. This can be an early sign that the wood is reacting to changes in temperature or humidity.
