Modern door hardware on an old door: how to approach a renovation
An old interior door does not necessarily need to be replaced to give your interior a new look. By replacing the existing door hardware, you can often easily modernize an old door. However, it is important to check the existing door, the lock, and the measurements beforehand.
First, check the existing door and the frame
Check the condition of the door and verify that the existing lock is still working properly. Also, measure the thickness of the door and look at the current recesses and drill holes. The door hardware is mounted onto the door, while the frame is primarily important for the lock's strike plate.
Measure the existing dimensions
When choosing new hardware, the existing measurements are important. For example, measure the center-to-center (PC) distance: the distance from the center of the handle hole to the center of the keyhole or profile cylinder. Additionally, check the backset of the lock and the location of existing mounting holes. Deviating sizes can occur with older doors.

A door plate can be useful during a renovation if you want to cover existing mounting spots or small irregularities. A rose, on the other hand, provides a sleeker and more modern look. Always check if the chosen set fits the existing door and lock.
When should you adjust the old door?
Sometimes the existing holes do not match the new hardware, or the old lock does not fit the new door handle. In that case, you can replace the lock, repair old holes, or create new mounting points. This way, you can often keep the existing door without replacing the entire door frame.
Practical tip: Measure the existing door and lock before ordering new door hardware. This prevents surprises during installation and lets you know in advance which parts may need to be replaced.
