Draftproofing with drop-down seals: Saving energy under interior doors

Drafts under interior doors are one of the biggest causes of heat loss in the home. Especially the gap between an unheated hallway or utility room and a warm living room creates a continuous cold airflow. With an automatic drop-down seal, you can solve this problem effectively and invisibly, which immediately saves you money on your energy bill.

How does an automatic drop-down seal work?

A drop-down seal is mounted on the underside of the door. As soon as the door closes, a plunger on the hinge side pushes a rubber seal tightly against the floor. When you open the door, the mechanism automatically retracts the strip. This prevents wear on your floor and you will not experience any obstruction when opening the door.

Our practical tip

When choosing a drop-down seal, people often hesitate between recessed and surface-mounted. Are you looking for a sleek, invisible finish for a new interior door? Then choose a recessed drop-down seal that fits into a milled slot at the bottom. For an existing door where you prefer not to mill, a surface-mounted drop-down seal is the quickest solution. When purchasing, always pay attention to the width of your door leaf; most drop-down seals can easily be shortened by a few centimeters for a seamless closure.
